CCD STEERING COMMITTEE Meeting - Minutes
June 29, 2003

The meeting was held at the home of Harriette and Kevin Liske at
4 p.m. on June 29, 2003.

Steering Committee members present: Lilian Bryan, Rob Harper, Jan Kent, Lalah Manly, Harriette Liske, Bruce Tarnopolski, and Emily Vorder Bruegge. Ann Robinson conferenced in by telephone.
Guests: Mary Grabar, Kevin Liske, Janet Shepard, and Christin
Whittington.

OLD BUSINESS:
Bruce said he would make and copy a cover sheet for the 2003 CCD Directory, with plans to have it available for sale by 7/4/03.

NOVEMBER DANCE WEEKEND
Theme Selection:
Christin provided detailed handouts of all submitted themes, without
disclosing who submitted each idea. Each person present at the meeting had
2 initial votes to narrow down the field of 27 possible themes. A second
round of votes selected the winning theme: "Much Ado About Contra" – a
Shakespearian theme, submitted by Christy Taylor.

DANCE BEHAVIOR AND SAFETY ISSUES
In response to a recent series of emails on the list serve discussing
unwanted dance behaviors, in particular "groping," the Steering Committee
discussed how to address problems of this nature. As an example of the type
of problem at issue, one of the steering committee members described being
approached by a newcomer recently who said her partner (who was a stranger to her) pulled her close and told her she "had to dance really close" to him. The steering committee member persuaded her to give contra dancing
another chance, and that the problem would be dealt with. Questions raised
included: When to address this type of problem? How to address this?
Should we try to identify offenders?" It might help to make sure newcomers
know to whom they can express complaints, by distributing a "welcome card"
to newcomers. The card would contain contact information for steering
committee members and possibly some other basic information, (such as
reminders about appropriate shoes). Suggested wording would be something
like: "If you have any ideas, suggestions, concerns or comments, we’d love
to hear from you." The contact information would enable anyone who felt
that they were being harassed to report the problem and possibly point out
the offender to a steering committee member. Steering committee members
could then speak to or write to any dancer who had a pattern of generating
complaints from other dancers. This has been done successfully in the past,
for instance, with rough dancers who have endangered the safety of others.
Bruce will also draft a statement to be posted to the list serve.

NEW BUSINESS: CUB CALLER PROGRAM
It was suggested that the role and effectiveness of the cub caller program
be reexamined. Although no conclusions were reached and no action decided
upon at this time, it is a topic that will continue to be considered in the
future.

GENERAL:
Christin mentioned it is not too early to start finding new people to be on
the nominating committee for new steering committee members.
For the record:
The rent for the Decatur Rec Center for the 2003 November dance weekend has been increased to $2,100.
The rent for Morningside on Friday nights is $275.
Tuesday night rent is $50.

The next meeting was set for Wednesday, July 16th, at 7:30 p.m. at Bruce
Tarnopolski’s house.

The meeting was then adjourned at 6 p.m.

Respectfully submitted,Emily Vorder Bruegge, CCD Recording Secretary
